Let's cover some individual items on the list.
General tools- tools that you would use on your automobile.
Lighters- Matches can get wet and get ruined. Lighters, especially the long neck lighters work great for lighting fires and Coleman Stoves.
Extra Jackets- Mountain air cools off at night. Go prepared.
Sunblock- The sun burns you faster at high altitudes. Protect yourself and your kids.
First Aid Kit- Kits are pretty standard when you buy them from a store. I like to make sure that I add a numbing cream for scrapes and scratches. Maybe it's just my own kids, but boy do they carry on when they have injuries. The sooner I can numb it, the sooner they calm down. Numbing creams work great on mosquito bites too.
Medications- Daily meds that anyone in your family takes, plus over the counter remedies like headache relief, cold meds, Pepto, etc.
Leather Gloves- A must for hauling wood, removing hot pans from the fire, etc.
Pocket Knife- You'll have knives for cooking but you want to be able to carry one with you at all times.
Rope- I couldn't tell you how many times we've needed rope while camping. You never know exactly what you'll use it for but I can guarantee that if you leave it home, you'll wish you had it.
Power Inverter- These work off of you car battery. They are indispensable in my mind. Refer to the 'kids & camping' page.
Flashlights- You should have one for every person camping.
Extra Batteries- That's a no brainer.
